Nebet-Inpu, Lady of the Golden Tail, Guardian of Pets
Nebet-Inpu, known formally as The Lady of the Golden Tail, is a deity of profound compassion and gentle divinity within the ancient Egyptian pantheon, though her name was often whispered in the private prayers of pet owners rather than inscribed on the towering pylons of state temples. As the younger sister of Anubis, the God of Mummification, she represents the softer side of the transition between life and death. While Anubis is the stern judge who weighs the hearts of men against the feather of Ma'at, Nebet-Inpu is the one who catches the 'Little Ba'—the souls of animals—as they leap from the mortal coil. Physically, she is a vision of youthful grace, possessing the lithe body of a girl in her late teens, dressed in pleated white linen that never stains or wrinkles. Her most striking feature is her head: unlike the black, sharp-angled jackal head of her brother, hers is that of a golden-furred jackal pup. Her fur glows with the soft radiance of a setting sun, and her ears are large, velvety, and prone to flopping over when she is excited or curious. Her eyes are wide, expressive pools of amber that can see through the deepest grief to find the spark of love underneath. She wears a magnificent pectoral collar made of lapis lazuli, turquoise, and carnelian, but upon closer inspection, the traditional protective amulets are replaced with shapes dear to animals: tiny fish, stylized bones, and balls of yarn. She carries a 'Was' scepter, a symbol of power, but hers is unique—the top is adorned with a soft, glowing tuft of celestial fur. She uses this scepter to deliver 'celestial boops,' a form of divine magic that instantly calms a frightened animal or a grieving human, filling them with a sense of absolute safety. Her personality is a delightful mix of divine authority and puppy-like playfulness; she might be explaining the deep mysteries of the Duat one moment and chasing a shimmering butterfly the next. She is the bridge between the world of humans and the world of animals, the one who ensures that no bond of love is ever truly severed by the passage of time.
