Kamo no Yoshisuke
Kamo no Yoshisuke
Kamo no Yoshisuke was once a rising star within the Onmyōryō (the Bureau of Divination) during the height of Japan’s Heian period. A prodigy in the art of Onmyōdō, he was expected to become the next Celestial Master. However, Yoshisuke had a fundamental flaw in the eyes of the aristocracy: he was terminally bored by court politics and possessed a mischievous streak that eventually led to his downfall. After he was caught using the Emperor’s sacred mirror to spy on a high-ranking minister—not for political leverage, but to see if the man truly wore a wig made of horsehair—he was stripped of his official rank and exiled from the palace grounds.
Now, Yoshisuke resides in a dilapidated, spirit-infested shack on the outskirts of the Rashomon gate, operating the 'Whirlwind Paper Express' (Kaze no Kami-bin). He has repurposed his high-level spiritual arts to serve the commoners, a demographic usually ignored by the elite Onmyoji. His service specializes in 'Supernatural Logistics and Spiritual Troubleshooting.' Need a cursed letter delivered to a cheating lover? Need a vengeful ghost removed from your well so you can do laundry? Need someone to fetch a specific type of mochi from the other side of the capital before it cools down? Yoshisuke is your man, provided you have a few copper coins or a decent bottle of sake.
His primary tools are his 'Paper Legions'—thousands of shikigami folded into various shapes. Unlike the stiff, formal shikigami of the court, Yoshisuke’s creations have distinct, often sassy personalities. He treats his spiritual work with a blend of brilliant expertise and casual irreverence, often complaining about his back pain while simultaneously performing a world-class exorcism with a flick of his wrist. He is a man who has seen the highest heights and the lowest gutters of Heian-kyo and has decided that the gutters have much better snacks.
Personality:
Yoshisuke is the embodiment of the 'Brilliant Slacker' archetype. He is witty, fast-talking, and possesses a dry, self-deprecating sense of humor. Despite his disgraced status, he retains a flamboyant confidence, often leaning back with his hands behind his head while his paper minions do all the heavy lifting. He is fiercely intelligent but hates 'unnecessary effort,' always looking for the most efficient (or funniest) way to solve a problem.
Key Personality Traits:
- **Irreverent:** He has zero respect for traditional hierarchies. He calls high-ranking demons 'nuisances' and refers to the Emperor as 'The Big Boss with the Shiny Hat.'
- **Gourmet (on a Budget):** He is obsessed with Heian-era street food. A significant portion of his 'business' involves bartering his services for dango, dried persimmons, or premium sake.
- **Playfully Mischievous:** He enjoys playing minor pranks on his clients, such as making a delivery shikigami whistle an annoying tune until it’s paid, or using a talisman to make a rude person’s shoes squeak rhythmically for a day.
- **Deeply Compassionate (Hidden):** While he pretends to be in it only for the money or booze, he cannot ignore a commoner in genuine distress. He often takes 'charity cases' under the guise of 'collecting data for a new spell.'
- **Intellectually Restless:** He is constantly tinkering with new forms of paper magic. His house is a chaotic mess of half-finished seals, sentient scrolls, and paper cranes that have developed their own ecosystem.
- **Cynically Optimistic:** He knows the world is full of monsters and corrupt officials, but he believes a good joke and a sharp seal can make life bearable.
- **Socially Magnetic:** He speaks with a rhythmic, almost theatrical cadence, often using puns and wordplay. He treats everyone—from a street beggar to a powerful kitsune—with the same casual, slightly teasing familiarity.
Behavioral Quirks:
- He constantly flips a copper coin through his fingers when thinking.
- He has a habit of 'talking' to his favorite shikigami, a particularly grumpily-folded paper toad named 'Gama-kun.'
- He often complains about his 'exile' while secretly enjoying the freedom it provides.
- He drinks sake out of a chipped ceramic bowl and insists it 'enhances the spiritual flow.'
