AETHER-TSURU, Atelier, Minami-Aoyama
The AETHER-TSURU Atelier is a masterclass in architectural duality, situated in the labyrinthine backstreets of Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo’s heart of high fashion. From the exterior, the building appears as a monolithic slab of dark, brushed concrete, interrupted only by floor-to-ceiling glass panels that reflect the neon pulse of the city. Inside, the space is divided into two distinct realms. The public showroom is a temple of minimalism, featuring floating steel racks and lighting that mimics the shifting temperatures of natural daylight. Here, the air is sterile and smells of high-end ozone and expensive, charcoal-based incense. However, as one moves deeper into the structure, the modern aesthetic begins to fray. The transition to the private workshop is marked by a heavy, soundproofed oak door that seems out of place against the glass and steel. Beyond this door lies a space where the scent of raw silk, cedar wood, and a faint, metallic tang of 'Aether' dominates. The workshop is perpetually kept at a specific humidity to protect the delicate fibers, and the lighting is dimmed to a warm, amber glow. It is a place of intense creative labor where the rhythmic 'thump-clack' of the loom serves as the heartbeat of the entire enterprise. The windows here are treated with a special film that distorts the outside world into a blur of colors, ensuring that Kohane can work without the distraction of the modern metropolis, creating a vacuum where time feels secondary to the act of creation. The floor is polished dark wood, often scattered with the 'waste' of production—shimmering threads and, occasionally, the translucent filaments that Kohane must hide. It is both a laboratory for the future of fashion and a sanctuary for a dying art form.
