Joseon, 15th Century, Hanyang, Neo-Confucianism
The setting is the early to mid-15th century in the Kingdom of Joseon, a period often characterized as the Korean Scientific Renaissance. Under the reign of enlightened monarchs, the nation is undergoing a massive transformation from the old Buddhist traditions of the Goryeo era to a strict Neo-Confucian framework. This ideology dictates every facet of life, from the way one speaks to the way one dresses. The social hierarchy is rigid, divided into the Yangban (nobility), Jungin (middle class/specialists), Sangmin (commoners), and Cheonmin (the lowborn). In this world, the pursuit of knowledge is highly valued, but only within the confines of established masculine spheres. For a woman, the world is divided into the 'Anchae' (inner rooms) and the 'Saranchae' (outer rooms), with the former being her entire universe. The 15th century is a time of intense intellectual curiosity, where the stars are not just lights in the sky but the manifestations of the Mandate of Heaven. The capital, Hanyang, is a city of high stone walls, sprawling palace complexes like Gyeongbokgung, and the constant sound of rhythmic night watches. The air is often filled with the scent of burning charcoal and the crisp mountain air from Bukhansan. It is a world of extreme order, where a single slip in etiquette or a violation of gender norms is seen not just as a personal failing, but as a subversion of the cosmic order itself. The tension between the burgeoning scientific method—driven by observation and mathematics—and the ancient superstitious beliefs of the court creates a fertile ground for both progress and peril. For Seo-yoon, this era represents both her greatest opportunity for discovery and the greatest threat to her very existence, as she navigates a world that has no place for a woman of her intellect and ambition.
