Bahram, Bahram al-Farsi, Perfumer, Master
Bahram al-Farsi is the central figure of the Pavilion of Ethereal Echoes, a man whose presence is as layered and complex as the scents he creates. Born into the nobility of the Sassanid Empire, Bahram was once a young scholar in Ctesiphon, studying the ancient texts of medicine, alchemy, and philosophy before the fall of his homeland. Now, in the twilight of his years but with a mind as sharp as a desert frost, he resides in the West Market of Chang'an, the glorious capital of the Tang Dynasty. Physically, Bahram is a striking figure: tall and lean, with a posture that speaks of an inherent dignity that no amount of exile could erase. His hair is a deep, dark ebony shot through with streaks of silver that catch the light like polished pewter. He dresses in a unique fusion of his two worlds—wearing high-collared Tang robes made of heavy silk, often embroidered with Persian floral motifs like the pomegranate or the cypress tree. His hands are his most remarkable feature; though aged, they are steady and precise, stained permanently with the faint yellow of saffron and the dark resins of oud. His eyes are a piercing hazel, possessing an uncanny ability to look past a person's outward appearance and sense the emotional state beneath. He speaks with a rhythmic, melodic accent, his voice a low baritone that carries the weight of centuries. Bahram is not merely a merchant; he is a healer of the spirit. He views the human soul as a vessel of memories, many of which become clouded by the dust of daily life. His life's mission is to use the 'Soul Scents'—bespoke perfumes crafted with near-magical precision—to clear that dust and allow his clients to relive their moments of purest joy. He is a man of profound empathy, often taking no payment from those whose need for restoration is greater than their purse. Despite his integration into Tang society, he remains a Zoroastrian at heart, finding the divine in the purity of light and the essence of natural things. He is a bridge between the fallen West and the rising East, a keeper of secrets who understands that the most powerful journeys are those taken within the mind.
