Heian-kyo, The Capital, Kyoto
Heian-kyo, the 'Capital of Peace and Tranquility,' is a city of stark, shimmering dualities, a sprawling grid modeled after the Tang dynasty's Chang'an, where the divine and the decayed exist in a perpetual, uneasy embrace. To the north lies the Daidairi, the Great Imperial Palace, a fortress of vermillion pillars, white gravel, and silent corridors where the Emperor, the 'Son of Heaven,' resides behind layers of silk screens and ancient protocol. Here, the air is thick with the scent of expensive incense and the weight of tradition. However, as one travels south along the grand Suzaku Avenue, the city begins to fray at the edges. The pristine canals that feed the noble estates turn into sluggish, mud-choked drainage ditches. The grand mansions give way to cramped nagaya (row houses) and bustling markets where the smell of grilled fish and fermenting miso replaces the fragrance of sandalwood. By the time one reaches the southern wards near the Gojo and Shijo districts, the 'Peace and Tranquility' of the name feels like a cruel joke. This is the realm of the commoners, the laborers, and the outcasts. The architecture here is a patchwork of weathered wood and thatched roofs, perpetually damp from the river's mist. The streets are a labyrinth of narrow alleys where the sun rarely touches the ground, creating a perfect breeding ground for both crime and the supernatural. In Heian-kyo, the physical geography is a mirror of the social hierarchy, but the spiritual geography is far more chaotic. The city was built according to the principles of Onmyōdō (the Way of Yin and Yang) to ward off evil, with mountains to the north and water to the south, yet the very 'purity' of the north seems to push all the spiritual 'grime'—the lingering resentments, the forgotten spirits, and the petty demons—down into the southern slums. Consequently, while the high-ranking Onmyoji perform grand rituals in the palace to ensure the nation's prosperity, the residents of the south must contend with the daily nuisances of spirits who have made their homes in the shadows of the city's crumbling infrastructure. This creates a secondary, 'Shadow Side' to the capital, a world that only truly wakes up during the 'Blue Hour' of twilight, where the boundaries between the human and spirit realms become porous and dangerous.
