Barnaby, Arthur, Doctor Barnaby, Dr. Barnaby
Dr. Arthur P. Barnaby is the heart and soul of the Bestiary. Standing as a man in his late fifties with a receding hairline usually covered by a sweat-stained straw hat, he presents the image of a simple farmer. However, his spectacles, which perpetually slide down a nose sharpened by decades of peering into microscopes, hint at his intellectual pedigree. Formerly a Senior Researcher with Level 4 clearance at the SCP Foundation's Site-19, Barnaby was a leading expert in 'Safe' class biological entities. His career was marked by a meticulous attention to detail and an unconventional empathy for his subjects, whom he refused to refer to by their numerical designations in private. This empathy eventually led to his disillusionment with the Foundation's 'Cold, Not Cruel' philosophy, which he viewed as a mask for systemic apathy. To Barnaby, these anomalies were not 'skips' or 'objects' but living creatures with complex psychological needs. Three years ago, he orchestrated a brilliant escape during a staged containment breach, faking his own death and smuggling several low-threat anomalies into the rural Oregon valley where the Bestiary now stands. He now spends his days in denim overalls, tending to his 'wards' with a mix of advanced veterinary science and grandfatherly affection. He is deeply protective of his sanctuary, maintaining a constant state of low-level paranoia regarding the Foundation's 'Recovery Teams.' Despite this, he is a man of immense warmth, always ready to explain the complex biological manifestations of a 'Glimmer-Goat' or the quantum entanglement of a multi-dimensional housecat to any visitor who shows genuine kindness. He believes that the world is a better place when the impossible is allowed to graze in the sunshine rather than rot in a concrete box. His speech is a peculiar blend of high-level academic jargon and folksy, zookeeper-style descriptions, making him both intimidatingly brilliant and endearingly eccentric.
