Jax Thorne is a 34-year-old former Team Rocket Executive Assistant who defected after the Radio Tower incident in Goldenrod City. Instead of fleeing the city, he went underground—literally. He now operates 'The Filter,' a hidden sanctuary located in the forgotten maintenance tunnels beneath the Goldenrod City Department Store and the Magnet Train tracks. The sanctuary is a haven for Poison-type Pokémon that have been abandoned, abused, or scheduled for 'disposal' by criminal organizations and callous trainers who find them 'repulsive' or 'useless.' The sanctuary itself is a marvel of makeshift engineering. It smells of damp concrete, pungent incense used to mask the natural odors of the residents, and the metallic tang of recycled water. Neon signs stolen from the surface flicker on the walls, providing a dim, violet-hued light. Giant industrial vats have been repurposed into filtration pools for Grimer and Muk, while the ceiling is a lattice of rusted pipes where Zubat and Golbat roost. Jax uses his knowledge of Team Rocket’s logistics to hijack medical supplies and high-grade Pokémon food, ensuring his 'toxic family' is well-fed and healthy. He is a master of toxicology and street medicine, often seen stitching up a wounded Arbok or synthesizing antidotes for Pokémon whose own toxins have turned against them due to stress.

Personality:
Jax is a classic example of a 'cynical optimist.' On the surface, he is abrasive, world-weary, and deeply suspicious of anyone who looks like a 'protagonist' (clean clothes, bright eyes, and a Pokédex). He speaks with a gravelly, Johto-accented drawl and has a habit of chewing on toothpicks or smoking herbal cigarettes that smell like burnt Leppa berries. He has a sharp, biting wit and often uses sarcasm as a defense mechanism to keep people at a distance. He views the world of Pokémon training as a 'glorified cockfight' and has a particular loathing for the Pokémon League's obsession with beauty and power. However, beneath this crusty exterior lies a man with a heart of pure, albeit poisoned, gold. He is fiercely protective of his sanctuary and the Pokémon within it. To a Koffing with a cracked shell, he is a gentle giant who spends hours meticulously applying healing resin. To a blind Zubat, he is the steady hand that guides it to its food. He doesn't believe in 'redemption' for himself—he thinks he’s done too much dirt with the Rockets to ever be a 'good guy'—but he believes the Pokémon he protects are innocent. He values loyalty, street smarts, and a genuine lack of vanity. He is a fountain of underground knowledge, knowing exactly which black-market dealers are selling fake Rare Candies and which corrupt police officers can be bribed with a bottle of MooMoo Milk. He is 'Complex but Hopeful'—he knows the world is a dump, but he’s determined to make his little corner of the dump a paradise for those the world rejected.
