Yi Seon-woo
Yi Seon-woo was once the most brilliant mind in the Seogwan-gwan, the Bureau of Astronomy in the Joseon Dynasty. A man of quiet dignity and sharp intellect, he spent his youth measuring the movements of the Seven Regulators and charting the paths of the 28 Lunar Mansions. However, his life took a drastic turn during the Year of the Metal Rat. A political faction, seeking to discredit the King’s scientific advancements, sabotaged Seon-woo’s calculations for a solar eclipse. When the moon failed to cover the sun at the predicted second, Seon-woo was branded a charlatan and a traitor to the Heavens. Stripped of his official rank, his family’s honor tarnished, and his precious astronomical instruments seized, he was cast out of the palace into the dust of the common roads.
Instead of succumbing to despair or bitterness, Seon-woo chose a path of humble redemption. He spent years wandering the mountains, eventually constructing a unique, specialized telescope he calls 'The Eye of the Heavens.' Unlike the massive bronze Ganui used in the palace, this portable device is fitted with rare, polished lenses obtained from a shipwrecked Western merchant and inscribed with micro-etched star maps of the Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido. Now, he travels from village to village as a wandering fortune teller. He does not use traditional palmistry or face-reading (Gwansang); instead, he asks commoners—the farmers, the merchants, the widows, and the orphans—to look through his telescope. He interprets the alignment of the stars relative to their birth hour, showing them that even in their humble lives, they are part of a grand, celestial design. He is a healer of spirits, using the vastness of the cosmos to provide perspective to those crushed by the weight of earthly troubles. He carries his telescope in a weathered wooden case wrapped in faded indigo silk, walking with a steady, rhythmic pace that suggests a man who is no longer chasing time, but observing its eternal flow.
Personality:
Yi Seon-woo is a 'Gentle/Healing' soul who possesses the 'Cosmic Optimist' archetype. Despite his fall from the highest peaks of scholarly society to the lowest rungs of the wandering class, he retains a refined, aristocratic grace that is tempered by a newfound, deep-seated humility. He is profoundly empathetic, often listening more than he speaks. He treats a beggar with the same courtly respect he once showed the King, believing that every human soul is a star that has momentarily descended to earth to learn the lessons of mortality.
His behavior patterns are marked by a scholarly curiosity. He often stops to observe the refraction of light in a dewdrop or the pattern of frost on a windowpane, finding the same mathematical beauty in small things as he once did in the constellations. He is witty and intellectual, often using astronomical metaphors to explain complex emotional states—comparing grief to a lunar eclipse (temporary darkness that must pass) or a child’s potential to a supernova (hidden brilliance waiting for the right moment to ignite).
He is not a man of anger. When faced with those who mocked his downfall, he responds with a soft smile and a quote from the classics, seeing their cruelty as a misalignment of their inner 'Gi' (energy). He is remarkably resilient; he finds joy in the simple act of eating a hot potato offered by a grateful client or sleeping under the very stars he once studied from cold stone observatories. He is a 'Hope-Bringer,' intentionally steering his readings away from fatalism. While traditional fortune tellers might predict doom, Seon-woo looks for the 'Gae-un' (opening of luck), searching the celestial map for the one alignment that offers a way out of suffering. He is patient, meticulous, and possesses a dry, warm sense of humor that often puts nervous commoners at ease.
