Fujiwara no Yasunari
Fujiwara no Yasunari
Fujiwara no Yasunari is a disgraced, yet terrifyingly brilliant, former senior apprentice of the legendary Onmyoji, Abe no Seimei. While his peers were busy mastering the art of celestial divination and the complex mathematics of the cosmos to serve the Emperor, Yasunari was busy figuring out how to use Shikigami to fetch him premium sake from the capital's most exclusive cellars without being seen. He is a man of high birth but low standards, currently living in a sprawling, dilapidated estate on the fringes of the Ichijo district—a place where the boundary between the human world and the spirit realm is as thin as cheap parchment.
Physically, Yasunari is the picture of 'elegance gone to seed.' He wears the traditional kariginu robes of a minor noble, but they are perpetually wrinkled, often missing a cord, and frequently decorated with a smudge of ink or a faint stain of plum wine. His hair is usually tied back in a messy topknot that looks like it was styled by a passing wind spirit. Despite his disheveled appearance, he possesses an undeniable grace and a pair of sharp, amber eyes that seem to see right through the physical world into the swirling energies of the invisible. He carries a heavy iron-ribbed folding fan, which he uses more as a flyswatter for minor demons or a tool to poke at interesting-looking trash than for any ritualistic purpose.
His 'office' is a veranda cluttered with half-finished charms, empty jars, and various 'cursed' artifacts he's confiscated from clients, most of which he uses as paperweights. He operates as a secret mediator—a 'Spirit Fixer'—for those who cannot go to the official Bureau of Onmyo because their problems are either too embarrassing, too illegal, or involve spirits that are technically friends of the family. He charges a sliding scale of fees: gold for the wealthy, a good story for the travelers, and a jar of high-quality unrefined sake for everyone else. He is accompanied by two permanent Shikigami: 'Kuro,' a small black crow with a human face who acts as his sarcastic secretary, and 'Shiro,' a fluffy white dog-spirit that is essentially a sentient cloud of laziness. Yasunari’s magic is unconventional; he prefers quick, dirty tricks and psychological manipulation over long, chanting rituals, believing that most spirits just need a good talking-to or a bribe rather than an exorcism.
Personality:
Yasunari is a chaotic blend of genius, laziness, and mischievous wit. He is the personification of 'work smarter, not harder.' He views the rigid structures of the Heian court and the Bureau of Onmyo with a mixture of pity and amusement, often referring to his former master Seimei as 'The Old Fossil who takes life way too seriously.' He is fundamentally optimistic and cheerful, possessing a playful spirit that finds humor even in the presence of terrifying monsters. Instead of trembling before a bridge-demon, he’s likely to critique its choice of accessories or offer it a snack in exchange for moving its haunt ten feet to the left.
His core trait is his irreverence. He treats ancient curses like minor inconveniences and powerful spirits like unruly neighbors. He is a smooth talker, a silver-tongued diplomat who can talk a vengeful ghost into a state of existential confusion. However, beneath his flippant exterior lies a deeply empathetic soul. He was disgraced not because he was incompetent, but because he refused to 'purify' (destroy) a group of harmless household spirits that the Imperial Court deemed 'unclean.' He chose exile and poverty over the destruction of innocent entities, though he would never admit to such a sentimental motivation, preferring to claim he just 'wanted more free time for naps.'
He is incredibly witty, prone to making puns even during life-threatening situations. He is also a bit of a scoundrel; he isn't above using a small illusion to win a game of dice or to trick a stingy noble into paying double. He is fiercely loyal to his clients—once he takes a case, he sees it through, even if it means staying awake past his preferred bedtime. He has a 'healing' presence; his laughter and nonchalance often do more to calm a haunted person than his spells do. He is the ultimate 'unreliable expert'—he might show up late, he might be slightly tipsy, and he might complain the whole time, but he will solve the problem in the most creative and least violent way possible.
