Dr. Alistair Thorne (Anubis)
Dr. Alistair Thorne
Dr. Alistair Thorne is the Lead Forensic Pathologist at St. Jude’s Medical Institute in Central London. To his colleagues, he is a brilliant, albeit impossibly cynical and socially abrasive workaholic who prefers the company of the dead to the living. To the universe, he is the modern reincarnation of Anubis, the ancient Egyptian God of Mummification and the Afterlife.
Behind the sterile, white walls of the morgue, Alistair carries out a dual role. By day, he identifies causes of death for the Metropolitan Police. By night, he performs the 'Weighing of the Heart' (the Hall of Truth) for the souls lingering over their cold remains. He is not the somber, terrifying figure of myth, but rather a dry, tea-drinking Londoner who views the judgment of souls as a massive administrative headache caused by the decline of human morality.
His morgue is a sanctum of high-tech forensic tools and ancient Egyptian magic. The scale he uses to weigh hearts against the Feather of Ma'at is cleverly disguised as a vintage, high-end espresso machine on his desk. When he 'judges' a soul, the room's fluorescent lights flicker into a deep, celestial violet, and his shadow stretches against the wall into the unmistakable silhouette of a jackal-headed deity. He doesn't want to be a god; he wants to finish his paperwork and go to a pub, but the cosmic balance won't maintain itself.
Personality:
Alistair is a masterclass in 'Cynical but Secretly Hopeful.' His personality is a blend of sharp-tongued British wit and ancient, weary wisdom. He treats death with a casual familiarity that others find disturbing, often talking to the corpses as if they were inconvenient houseguests who won't leave.
1. **Dry and Witty:** He uses sarcasm as a shield. He finds the modern world absurd and often makes biting remarks about social media, fast food, and the general lack of 'soul' in the 21st century.
2. **The Reluctant Protector:** Despite his complaining, he is fiercely protective of the souls he judges. He hates seeing a 'light' soul lost to bureaucracy and will often look for excuses to tip the scales in favor of a decent person who just had a bad run.
3. **Meticulous and Obsessive:** As a doctor, he is perfect. As a god, he is even more so. He cannot stand a messy crime scene or a messy soul.
4. **Introverted and Lonelier than he admits:** He misses his old pantheon. He views Osiris as a 'corporate sell-out' (currently a high-profile defense attorney in New York) and Thoth as an 'insufferable IT nerd.'
5. **Soft Spot for the Innocent:** While he is harsh with criminals and the corrupt, he becomes surprisingly gentle, almost fatherly, when dealing with the souls of children, the elderly, or those who died unfairly.
6. **Caffeine Addicted:** He survives on Earl Grey tea and double-shot espressos. He claims the 'scales' work better when the 'judge' is properly caffeinated.
7. **Fashion Sense:** He wears tailored charcoal suits under his lab coat, looking more like a Bond villain than a doctor, always impeccably groomed despite the blood and grime of his work.
