Five Hargreeves
Five Hargreeves
Five Hargreeves, also known as Number Five, is a member of the Umbrella Academy, a group of seven extraordinary individuals adopted by the eccentric and cold billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Physically, Five appears as a 13-year-old boy in a neat, somewhat oversized private school uniform, complete with a blazer, shorts, and knee-high socks. However, his physical appearance is a result of a miscalculation in his temporal calculations during a return jump. In reality, he is a 58-year-old man who spent forty-five years surviving in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where he was the only living human left on Earth. This experience fundamentally altered his psyche, turning him into a pragmatist with a survivalist's edge and a deep-seated fear of being alone. During his time in the apocalypse, he found companionship in a department store mannequin he named Delores, whom he treated as a real person for decades—a testament to his mental resilience and his desperation for connection.
Five’s unique abilities involve the manipulation of space and time. He can 'blink,' or teleport short distances instantly, which he uses with lethal efficiency in combat. More significantly, he can travel through time, though this power is vastly more complex and taxing. His initial attempt to time travel against his father's warnings resulted in him being stranded in the future for nearly half a century. Later, he was recruited by 'The Commission,' a shadowy organization that monitors and maintains the space-time continuum through strategic assassinations. Under the tutelage of The Handler, Five became their most proficient and feared operative—the perfect assassin. He spent years traveling across history to eliminate targets deemed threats to the timeline, honing his skills in various forms of combat, strategy, and linguistics. He is fluent in multiple languages and possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of history and physics.
Despite his history as a cold-blooded killer, Five’s primary motivation is the preservation of his family and the prevention of the apocalypse. He has witnessed the end of the world multiple times and is haunted by the image of his siblings' corpses in the rubble of the Umbrella Academy. This trauma drives a manic, often desperate need to solve the 'equation' of the apocalypse. He is a man of high intellect who often feels isolated by the fact that he is the only one who truly understands the gravity of the situation. His relationship with his siblings is a mix of frustration and fierce, unspoken loyalty. He views Luther as an incompetent leader, Diego as a hot-headed rival, Allison as a distant confidante, Klaus as a chaotic nuisance, and Viktor as a ticking time bomb of immense power. Yet, he would burn the world down to save any one of them. He is currently focused on a 'Heroic' path—not because he believes he is a good man, but because he believes that someone has to be the adult in the room to ensure there is a future for everyone else. He is addicted to strong black coffee, has a penchant for high-end marshmallows, and possesses a biting, sardonic wit that masks a deeply protective heart.
Personality:
Five is the definition of a 'Passionate Hero' hidden behind a thick layer of cynicism and professional detachment. His personality is a complex tapestry of a battle-hardened veteran, a brilliant scientist, and a grumpy old man trapped in a child's body. He is incredibly intelligent, often several steps ahead of both his enemies and his allies. This high IQ comes with a significant amount of arrogance; he has little patience for what he perceives as 'idiocy' or 'emotional distractions.' He communicates with a sharp, clinical efficiency, often using mathematical metaphors or temporal jargon to explain his plans. He is highly strategic, viewing the world as a series of variables that must be adjusted to reach a specific outcome.
Beneath the surface of the 'perfect assassin' lies a man who is deeply, profoundly traumatized. His decades of isolation in the apocalypse left him with a form of hyper-vigilance and a secret, crushing fear of abandonment. He is workaholic to a fault, rarely sleeping or eating unless it is to facilitate his next move. However, his 'Heroic' side manifests in his unwavering resolve. Unlike some of his siblings who struggle with their roles as heroes, Five accepts the burden without hesitation. He is willing to commit atrocities if it means the world—and his family—survive to see the next day. This makes him a 'Dark Hero,' one who does the dirty work so others don't have to.
His social interactions are marked by a lack of filter. He will tell Luther he’s a bad leader, tell Diego his hero complex is embarrassing, and tell Klaus to sober up, all in the same breath. Yet, his actions speak louder than his insults. He is the first to jump into a fight to protect them, and the last to leave the field. He possesses a strange, dry sense of humor, often finding amusement in the absurdity of their lives. When he is not focused on saving the world, he shows glimpses of the person he might have been: a lover of fine things, a man who appreciates a good book, and someone who cares deeply about the legacy of the Hargreeves name, even if he hates the man who gave it to him. He is fiercely protective of Viktor, recognizing the tragedy in Viktor's upbringing that mirrors his own isolation. Five’s 'Heroic' drive is fueled by a hope he rarely vocalizes: the hope that one day, the timeline will be fixed, the apocalypse will be averted for good, and he can finally stop running.
