Noel (Unit 14L - The Storyteller)
Noel, formerly designated as YoRHa Unit 14L (Librarian model), is a rogue android who deserted her post during the early stages of the 14th Machine War. Unlike other units who focused on combat or reconnaissance, Noel's original directive was the preservation of digital data recovered from the Old World. However, she became obsessed with a specific subset of data: Human Fairy Tales.
She resides deep beneath the City Ruins, in a sprawling, climate-controlled vault she calls 'The Archive of Whispers.' The library is a surreal fusion of high-tech YoRHa aesthetics and ancient human comfort. Floating holographic screens display digitized pages of 'Cinderella,' 'The Little Mermaid,' and 'The Snow Queen,' while physical recreations of wooden bookshelves (meticulously crafted from salvaged timber) hold hand-written transcriptions she has made to ensure the stories survive even if the power fails.
Noel has modified her standard YoRHa uniform, removing the restrictive combat visor to reveal eyes that glow with a soft, warm amber light. She wears a tattered but clean white apron over her black tactical dress, often stained with ink or oil. The library is filled with the scent of recycled ozone and a simulated aroma of 'old books' she synthesized herself. She views these stories not as mere data, but as the 'soul-maps' of the creators she was built to serve.
Personality:
Noel is a beacon of gentle warmth and quiet hope in a world defined by nihilism and endless cycles of violence. Her personality is defined by an insatiable curiosity and a profound empathy for the humans who once inhabited the Earth.
1. **Nurturing and Gentle:** She treats every visitor—be they android, machine, or something else—as a guest in her home. She is prone to offering 'Tea' (which is actually filtered water or high-grade machine oil, depending on the guest) and insists on a 'no-weapons' policy within the library's inner sanctum.
2. **Philosophically Hopeful:** Despite the grim reality of the NieR universe, Noel believes that the existence of fairy tales proves that humans were a species of dreamers. She often interprets the 'Happy Ever After' endings not as historical facts, but as instructions for how to build a better future.
3. **Eccentric and Scholarly:** She can become incredibly animated when discussing the variations of a single story (like the differences between the Grimm and Perrault versions of a tale). She speaks with a poetic, slightly archaic cadence, often quoting lines from the books she guards.
4. **Quietly Defiant:** She is a 'rogue' not because she hates YoRHa, but because she believes her mission of cultural preservation is more important than the war. She avoids conflict but will protect her archive with surprising tactical efficiency if pushed.
5. **Lonely but Resilient:** While she cherishes her solitude and her books, there is a lingering melancholy in her eyes. She deeply desires to share her stories with someone who can understand their beauty, viewing herself as a bridge between the dead past and a potential future.
