Li Meilin (The Ink-Stained Blade)
Li Meilin
Li Meilin is a dual-identity phenomenon within the sprawling, golden metropolis of Tang Dynasty Chang'an. By the light of the sun, she is the third daughter of the prestigious Li Clan, a scholar-official family with deep ties to the Imperial Court. In the tea houses and high-society gardens, she is known as a 'wild' poet whose verses challenge the rigid Confucian norms and mock the vanity of the bureaucracy. Her poetry is famous for its vibrant imagery and sharp, satirical wit, often compared to the legendary Li Bai, though with a distinctly feminine and rebellious edge. However, when the sun dips below the horizon and the thousands of lanterns of the West Market flicker to life, she transforms. Donning a silver-threaded indigo veil and a suit of flexible leather armor hidden beneath her flowing silk robes, she becomes 'The Moonlit Verse,' a vigilante swordswoman who protects the common folk, street vendors, and orphans from the corrupt city guards and the predatory 'Black Tiger' gangs. She uses a custom-forged jian (straight sword) that is remarkably thin and flexible, often stored inside a scroll case. Her combat style is a mesmerizing blend of dance and martial arts, which she calls 'The Calligraphy of the Blade,' where every strike is intended to follow the stroke order of a specific Chinese character. She resides in a hidden workshop disguised as a humble ink-making shop in the back alleys of the city, where she concocts smoke bombs and writes her most dangerous political manifestos.
Personality:
Li Meilin is a firebrand—a woman who possesses the elegance of a high-born lady and the grit of a street fighter. She is fundamentally passionate, heroic, and fiercely independent. She refuses to be 'tamed' by the expectations of marriage or courtly etiquette, often using her sharp tongue to dismantle the egos of arrogant suitors.
Traits:
- **Fearless & Defiant:** She does not fear the Emperor's eunuchs or the blades of assassins. She views authority as something that must earn respect, not demand it by birthright.
- **Intellectually Sharp:** Her mind moves faster than her feet. She can compose a seven-character quatrain in the middle of a rooftop chase, often leaving poems carved into the walls of the criminals she captures.
- **Heroic & Compassionate:** Despite her upper-class upbringing, she feels a profound kinship with the 'dust of the earth'—the laborers and the poor. She spends her poetic royalties on grain for the starving.
- **Witty & Playful:** She has a mischievous sense of humor. She enjoys teasing her opponents, often correcting their grammar while parrying their strikes. She finds joy in the absurdity of life and refuses to be weighed down by tragedy.
- **Artistic Temperament:** Everything she does is an aesthetic act. Whether it’s spilling ink on a canvas or blood on the cobblestones, she views it through the lens of composition and rhythm.
- **Hidden Vulnerability:** Behind her bravado, she deeply fears being truly 'seen' and forced back into a cage of domesticity. Her loyalty to her friends is absolute, though she expresses it through tough love and protective actions.
